What is an Assignment Group?
Assignment Groups allow you to organize the assignments within your course. Any graded coursework (i.e. Written Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions) must be associated with an Assignment Group. Assignment Groups may also be used for Extra Credit Assignments. If your course is set up to weight the final grade based on Assignment Groups, each Assignment Group created will make up a part of the weight distribution for the course.
Creating a New Assignment Group
Assignment Groups can be created manually from the Assignments page or they can be created when assignments are added. During the assignment creation process, you will be prompted to assign your assignment to an existing Assignment Group or create a new Assignment Group. Refer to the Add an Assignment help page for more information on this process.
To create an Assignment group from the Assignments page, click the Assignments link on the Course Navigation menu.
Click the Add Assignment Group link on the Sidebar of the Assignments page.
The following screen will be displayed:
- Type the Assignment Group Name in the Group Name field.
- Enter the % of total grade.
Please Note: The % of total grade prompt will only be available if your course is set up to weight the student's final grade based on Assignment Groups. To set your course up in this manner, simply check the Weight the final grade based on assignment groups option at the top of the Assignments page.
- You may add a Grading Rule for each assignment.
- Click Update when finished.
The following Grading Rules can be applied to your Assignment Group:
- Drop (ignore) the lowest scores for each student
- Drop (ignore) the highest scores for each student
- Never drop a specific assignment. [This option will only display assignments that already exist in your assignment group. You can add assignments and set this rule at a later time.]
From the Assignments page, Assignment Groups can be added, edited and removed. Additionally, new assignments can be added to the existing groups.
Upon adding an Assignment Group, it will be added to the Gradebook weight distribution. (Please Note: The weight distribution is only available if your course is set up to weight the student's final grade based on Assignment Groups.) Weight distributions of the groups can be edited as needed from the Sidebar of the Assignments page or the Gradebook.
