If you have set time limits on your quizzes/exams, you have the ability to offer additional time to an individual student or to multiple students using the Moderate tool.
To allow a student/students additional time, you must first access the specific quiz/exam. Quizzes/exams can be accessed from the Course Navigation menu or from the Gradebook.
To access the quiz/exam from the Course Navigation:
- Select Quizzes from the Course Navigation menu.
- Select the specific quiz/exam for which you would like to allow an additional attempt.
To access the quiz/exam from the from the Gradebook:
- Select Grades from the Course Navigation menu.
- Click the link for the specific quiz/exam for which you would like to allow an additional attempt.

Add Additional Quiz/Exam Time for an Individual Student
- Once you have accessed the specific quiz/exam for which you would like to allow additional time, click the Moderate This Quiz link on the Sidebar under Related Items.
- The Moderate Quiz page displays the following information:
- Student name
- Number of times the student has already attempted to take the quiz
- Time it took for the student to complete the quiz; the running time will display for students who are currently taking the quiz (counting down for timed quizzes and counting up for non-timed quizzes)
- Number of remaining attempts, if any
- Student's quiz score
- An option to refresh the page in order to make sure all statistics are current
- Click the Pencil icon next to the name of the student whose quiz you want to moderate.
The Following screen will be displayed: - If needed, enter the number of extra attempts that you'd like to give to the student in the Extra Attempts field. [A]
- Enter the number of additional minutes you'd like to give to the student in the Extra Time on Every Attempt field. [B]
Please Note: If the student hasn't taken the quiz, the extra time will be added to the student's initial attempt and any additional attempts. - If the quiz is locked, you will need to unlock the quiz for the student by clicking the manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt checkbox. [C]
Please Note: if this option is not selected at this time and the quiz is later found to locked, you can access the Moderate Quiz tool again, select the Pencil icon next to the students name, and select the Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt checkbox to unlock the quiz. - Click the Save button. [D]

Add Additional Quiz/Exam Time for Multiple Students
- Once you have accessed the specific quiz/exam for which you which you would like to allow an additional attempt, click the Moderate This Quiz link on the Sidebar under Related Items.
The Moderate Quiz page displays the following information:
- To allow addtional time for multiple students, click the checkbox next to each of their names. [A] If you want to select all students, click the top checkbox [B]. In this example, three students are selected.
- Click the Change Extensions for [#] Selected Students button [C] to give additional time to the students.
- Enter the number of additional minutes you'd like to give to the students in the Extra Time on Every Attempt field.
Remember : Extra attempts and time added, if applicable, will apply to all selected students. - Click the Save button.
Additional time that has been added will be visible from the Moderate Quiz screen.

Add Extra time For a Current Attempt:
If a student is actively taking a timed quiz/exam and requires additional time, you may choose to extend the time by accessing the Moderate Quiz tool.
Upon accessing the Moderate Quiz tool, the following screen will be displayed. If a student is currently taking a timed quiz/exam, the remaining time will display next to a clock icon:
To extend the quiz/exam time, click the clock icon. The screen shown below will appear. The following information/options exist on this screen:
- The time the quiz began and the time the quiz is scheduled to end.
- A field to input the number of minutes to extend the quiz.
Please Note: The number of minutes entered at this field will be added to the current amount of time that remains. For example, if a student has 2 minutes left and you add 5 minutes, the student will have a total of 7 minutes to complete the quiz. - Selecting Now from the drop down menu will extend the time the indicated number minutes from the current time. Leaving this option blank will add ‘X’ number of minutes to the student’s current time.
Please Note: Selecting Now might mean that the student will have less time than was originally on the clock. - Select the Extend Time button.
If Now is selected, and the student receives less time than they currently have, you will receive a confirmation screen. Select OK to proceed or Cancel to change the time or remove the NOW option.
