Students do not receive a grade for practice quizzes, even though the quiz results display the number of points earned in the quiz. Practice quizzes do not appear in the Syllabus or the Gradebook.
      • Graded Quiz - used as a learning tool to help students see how well they understand the course material. Students receive a grade for the quizzes.
      • Graded Survey - allows the instructor to give students points for completing the survey, but it does not allow the survey to be graded for right or wrong answers. Graded surveys have the option to be anonymous.
      • Ungraded Survey - allows you to get opinions or other information from your students, but students do not receive a grade for their responses. With ungraded surveys, you can make responses anonymous. Ungraded surveys do not appear in the Syllabus or the Gradebook.
    2. Assignment Group: Categorize the quiz into the proper Assignment group from the drop down menu. (Assignment Groups are created within the Assignments link located on the Course Navigation.)
    3. Shuffle Answers: Check this option to shuffle (randomize) answers.
    4. Time Limit: Set a time limit for the quiz by entering the number of minutes students have to complete the entire quiz.
      • Timed quizzes begin once a student begins the exam and will not be paused if the student navigates away from the quiz. If no time limit is set, students will have unlimited time to complete the quiz.
    5. Allow Multiple Attempts: Check this option to allow students to take the quiz multiple times.
      • If multiple attempts are allowed, you will need to select the Quiz Score to Keep- highest or latest. By default, the highest score is used unless this setting is changed. You must also set the number of Allowed Attempts for the quiz. Dashed lines indicate unlimited attempts. For additional information on how to view a student's previous quiz/exam attempts, please refer to the Allow Extra Quiz/Exam Attempts help page.
    6. Let Students See Their Quiz Responses: Check this option to allow students to view their quiz results.
      • If selected, you will need to choose whether or not you would like to Show Which Answers Were Correct.

Please Note: By default, quizzes will always let students see their quiz responses and see which answers were correct. If you do not want students to see their quiz responses, you will have to uncheck these options.
    7. Set Quiz Restrictions: Select any restrictions you would like for the quiz.
      • Require an access code in order to start the quiz. If selected, you will be required to input an Access Code.
      • Require students to take a quiz from a computer lab with a specified IP address range. If selected, you will be required to enter an IP Filter.

Please Note: If you have the Respondus LockDown Browser enabled by your institution, using that browser will also appear as an option here. The Respondus LockDown Browser does not allow other windows to be opened during the quiz and helps prevent cheating.
    8. Show One Question at a Time: Select this option if you would like questions displayed one at a time. If this option is not selected, all questions will be displayed at once. Check the Lock questions after answering to prevent students from returning to the previous question once it has been answered.

Add Questions

Click the Questions Tab to begin building questions for the quiz. There are three options for adding questions to your quiz.

Quiz Questions

  1. New Question - build a new question from “scratch”.
    Add Question
    1. Question Title
    2. Question Type Options
    3. The number of points the question is worth (quiz totals are calculated based on combined total of questions)
    4. Question Text (Use the Content Editor to include text, video, images, equations, or flash activities)
    5. Question response options
    6. Feedback received at the end of the question
    7. Select the Update Question button or the Add Another Answer link.
  2. New Question Group - creating groups allows you create a quiz with certain types of questions and how many questions to ask per group, and the point value. For example, you can create an exam that asks x number of T/F, Multiple Choice, Essay, and Extra Credit questions.
    Add Question Group
    1. Group Name
    2. Number of questions to be randomly selected from the group
    3. Number of points assigned to each question
    4. Create Group
Please Note: The option to Link to a Question Bank to reference existing pools of questions is available to you. When using question banks, be sure to make changes within the Question Bank before linking the quiz to the question bank. Although you can make changes to the question bank after a quiz is published, students who have already opened or completed the quiz will not see any of the changes, which may affect their grades. It is important to understand that questions linked to a question bank cannot be regraded since they may be used in more than one question bank. As a result, the use of Question Banks is not recommended as it will limit the grading functionality available to you.

If a question bank is used, the system will reference your chosen bank of questions as each student takes the quiz. Each student will receive a random selection of questions pulled from the bank. These questions will not be in sequential order and will be presented randomly each time the quiz is taken or previewed. You can define how many questions you want to randomly select and the number of points assigned to each question.

Please see the Use the Re-Grade Tool Help Page for more information on regrading.
  3. Find Questions - Allows you select existing questions from your course for a quiz. You may also create question groups which include existing questions from your course.

    Find Question
    1. List of question banks that exist in your course.
    2. List of questions in the selected test bank. Use the Select All link to add all questions to the quiz or manually select the questions you would like to add to the quiz.
    3. Add questions
From this screen you may also create a quiz group or add questions to an existing bank by selecting the option from the drop down menu. If creating a new group, you will be prompted to create the Group Name, select the number of questions to be asked, and the number points to assign to the group [A]. Then you may add the questions to your group [B].
  4. Find Question

When the building portion of the quiz is complete, you will be able to preview the quiz [A] to ensure that it is presented to students in the correct format that you would like. If all details look correct, click the Publish button [B]. You may edit the quiz if needed. Every time a quiz is edited, the quiz will need to be re-published. You can also lock the quiz so that student's cannot take it [C].

Publish Quiz

Please Note: If an exam is not published after it is built or edited, then student's will not see it on their end. You should not publish your quiz until it is your final product. Although you can make changes to the quiz after it is published, students who have already opened or completed the quiz will not see any of the changes, which may affect their grades.

Once you have created your quiz, we suggest that you add it to the Module section of your course. This makes it easier for students to locate and/or access the quiz while doing their course work.
