Instructor Orientation: Manage Written Assignment Resubmissions

Students have the ability to resubmit written assignments after their initial submission, if needed. They are permitted to resubmit their written assignments as many times as necessary as long as the assignment remains available. If the assignment remains available, when students access an assignment they have previously submitted, there will be a Re-submit Assignment link in the Sidebar below the previous assignment submission details.

Resubmit Assignment

Please Note: Setting a Due Date for an assignment will not restrict students from submitting/resubmitting their assignments. Assignment submissions made after the Due Date will simply be noted as late in the Gradebook. Availability dates can be used to ensure that students do not submit assignments before/after a certain date. If availability dates have been set and a situation arises where a student needs to submit an assignment after the Available Until date, you can extend the Available Until date to allow this submission. It is important to understand that any extensions made to the assignment availability dates will be global and will be applied to all students. For more information regarding adding due dates and availability dates, please refer to the Add Due Dates help page.

View Assignment Submissions in the SpeedGrader

All assignment submissions can be viewed in SpeedGrader.

When viewing re-submitted assignments in the SpeedGrader, you have the ability to easily navigate between multiple submissions for the assignment. Simply select one of the date- and timed-stamped submission options from the drop-down menu under the Submission to view: heading. If you select a submission that was done prior to the most recent submission, you will see a "Note: This is not the most recent submission." message in yellow. These functions allow you to decide which submission you want to grade, which can be quite useful in a variety of circumstances. For instance, if a student re-submits without your permission, you can choose and grade an earlier, pre-due date submission. Conversely, if you gave a student permission to re-submit, then you can choose and grade the most recent submission.

To review an assignment, open the student's assignment in SpeedGrader. When a student has submitted multiple submissions, you can view them by clicking the drop-down button and selecting the submission you would like to review.

Please Note: If you view an older submission, the course site will warn you that the submission you are viewing is not the most recent version.

Regrading Resubmitted Assignments

If you have already graded an assignment that a student has resubmitted, you have the option of using the same grade for the resubmission without doing any additional work. To apply the same grade to the new assignment, click the Use this same grade for the resubmission link.
