Instructor Orientation: Curve Grades

You can use the Gradebook to curve grades for an assignment. In the academic community, curving grades is advisable if only a certain number of students can pass, or when you require a fixed distribution of grades distributed throughout the class.

To curve grades, the system asks for a median curve score and then adjusts the scores as a bell curve 66% around the median score. For instance, if the median score is the equivalent of a C, the system would distribute mostly C- and C+ scores, distributing outward down the curve to Bs and Ds, and then ultimately As and Fs. This type of scoring creates a predictable distribution, but it means that students will compete against their classmates for scoring.

Important Note: Grade curving cannot be undone. Pre-curved grade histories will be available, but the curving action is irreversible.

To Curve the Grade:

  1. Access the Gradebook by clicking the Grades link on the Course Navigation.
  2. Open the specific assignment drop-down menu by hovering over the assignment title and clicking the downward arrow.

  3. Click the Curve Grades link to set curving options.
  4. Set the Curve Score:

    1. Type a numerical value in the Average Score field to act as the curve score.
    2. The graph will change depending on the score that is entered to give you an approximation of what the new scores would look like.
(You can adjust the average score as necessary to produce a desired grading outcome.)
    3. You can assign a zero score to any student(s) who did not submit the assignment by checking the Assign zeroes to unsubmitted students
      checkbox.
    4. Select the Curve Grades button to apply the curve to the assignment.
  5. View the new curved grades for the assignment.
