Instructor Orientation: Calculate Final Grades

At the end of the semester, there may be assignments that have not been completed by your students. In order to properly calculate the final course grade for your students, all incomplete assignments should be treated as if they had been completed by students. In cases such as this, you can manually enter zeros one by one for each student or you can use the Treat Ungraded as 0's feature to calculate a grade as if all assignments had been completed.

Use Treat Ungraded as 0's Feature

To access the Treat Ungraded as 0's feature:

  1. Access the Gradebook.
  2. Click the Settings icon and select the Treat Ungraded as 0's link to enable this feature.

Treat Ungraded Feature

Please Note: Clicking on the Treat Ungraded as 0's link will enable the feature. A check mark next to the link indicates that the feature is enabled.

Treat Ungraded Feature Enabled

Clicking the Treat Ungraded as 0's link again will disable it.

This feature can be used throughout the semester to track student’s grades or at the end of the semester when you are ready to close out your Gradebook and send final grades to your school’s registrar for posting.

Please Note: Enabling the Treat Ungraded as 0's feature will not affect what students see in their Gradebook.

When using the Treat Ungraded as 0's feature, each assignment—including actual ungraded assignment submissions—for every student will be affected. Assignment submissions that have not been given a grade will be treated as if a student received a score of zero. The assignment groups and total columns will automatically factor the zero scores into the overall percentage for each student [1].

Please Note: Even when this setting is enabled, the system will not populate the empty grade fields in the Gradebook with zeros. Dashes will still be displayed for each student assignment that has not been completed [2].

Set Default Grades

If you would like to set a default grade for a certain assignment, you can use the Set Default Grade feature in the Gradebook. This will allow you to input default scores for students who do not have scores or to overwrite already entered scores (optional). If an assignment has a default grade defined, this grade will be automatically entered for all students who do not have a grade. This feature can be used if a deadline has passed or you no longer want the assignment to remain accessible to students. Posting a default grade of 0% will help update the student current grade based on the completed coursework.

To access the Set Default Grade feature, access the Gradebook by selecting the Grades link on the Course Navigation menu.
