Instructor Orientation: Enter Grades

Exams and Quizzes are automatically graded by the system upon student completion. As long as the Exams/Quizzes do not contain questions types that require instructor grading (i.e. Essay questions, File Upload questions), no instructor intervention is necessary for grading. Written assignments and Discussions are left to the instructor’s discretion for grading.

There are two methods that can be used to enter student grades. Grades can be entered manually from within the Gradebook or they can be entered using the SpeedGrader tool.

Enter a Grade Manually

To enter or edit scores manually from within the Gradebook, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Grades link on the Course Navigation Menu.
  2. Click the assignment cell located in the row of the student whose score you want to enter.
  3. Type the score in the cell or use the arrows to select the new score in the cell and press Enter. New scores are saved automatically.

Enter a Grade Using the SpeedGrader

The SpeedGrader tool allows you to view and grade student assignment submissions in one place using a simple point scale or a complex rubric.

The SpeedGrader tool can be used to:

The Speedgrader tool has six areas. The functions of these six areas are described below:

  1. View student submissions: Student submission text can be viewed in the main body of the page.
  2. Assign a grade: Enter a grade based on your preferred assessment method (points or percentage).
  3. View rubric: If a rubric has been added to the assignment, it can be viewed to assist with grading.
  4. View discussions: View any assignment related discussions created by you or the student.
  5. Add/remove text comments: Add text comments for the student by entering your text in the Add a Comment field and then clicking the Submit Comment button. To attach a file to the comment, click the Paper icon. Comments will be organized chronologically in the Discussion area of the screen with the older comments appearing near the top and the newer comments appearing at the bottom. To remove a comment, click the X to the right of the comment.
  6. Move to a different student’s submission: Click the downward arrow button to view a list of all students in the course. To select a different student in the course, simply click the name of the student whose assignment you would like to view. SpeedGrader initially opens the assignment for the first student listed in the student list, arranged alphabetically by last name. Click the right or left arrow on either side of the student name field to select the next/previous student in the list.

Please Note: The date and time the assignment was submitted is displayed in the top right corner of the screen along with a link to download any files submitted. If a student has submitted more than one assignment, the submission view will include a drop-down menu where you can view prior submissions. By default, the date of the most recent assignment will always be shown first.

For each assignment, the SpeedGrader tool provides you with an overview of how many student submissions have received grades and what the average grade is. You can track your progress by locating the number of student submissions you've graded and the average grade received in the upper right corner of the speedgrader window.

If you want to view all the student grades at one time, you can return to the Gradebook.

The SpeedGrader can be accessed via the Gradebook or from any graded Assignment, Quiz, or Graded Discussion. To enter the SpeedGrader from within the Gradebook, click the downward arrow for the specific assignment you would like to grade.

To access the SpeedGrader from within a graded assignment or quiz, select the SpeedGrader™link that appears in the Sidebar under Related Items.

Once grades have been entered in the SpeedGrader, the grades will automatically appear in the Gradebook.
