You may encounter different scenarios in which students may request additional attempts for quizzes/exams. For instance, a student may have had technical issues during their original attempt or they may have missed the quiz/exam due date. In cases such as this, you can allow an individual student, several students, or the entire class to have additonal attempts for a quiz or exam using the Moderate tool.
To allow a student/students additional attempts, you must first access the specific quiz/exam. Quizzes/exams can be accessed from the Course Navigation menu or from the Gradebook.
To access the quiz/exam from the Course Navigation:
- Select Quizzes from the Course Navigation menu.
- Select the specific quiz/exam for which you would like to allow an additional attempt.
To access the quiz/exam from the from the Gradebook:
- Select Grades from the Course Navigation menu.
- Click the link for the specific quiz/exam for which you would like to allow an additional attempt.

Allow Extra Quiz/Exam Attempts for an Individual Student
- Once you have accessed the specific quiz/exam for which you which you would like to allow an additional attempt, click the Moderate This Quiz link on the Sidebar under Related Items.
- The Moderate Quiz page displays the following information:
- Student name
- Number of times the student has already attempted to take the quiz
- Time it took for the student to complete the quiz; the running time will display for students who are currently taking the quiz (counting down for timed quizzes and counting up for non-timed quizzes)
- Number of remaining attempts, if any
- Student's quiz score
- An option to refresh the page in order to make sure all statistics are current
- Click the Pencil icon next to the name of the student whose quiz you want to moderate.
The Following screen will be displayed: - Enter the number of extra attempts you'd like to give to the student in the Extra Attempts field.
- If the quiz is locked, you will need to unlock the quiz for the student by clicking the Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt checkbox.
- Click the Save button

Allow Extra Quiz/Exam Attempts for Multiple Students
- Once you have accessed the specific quiz/exam for which you which you would like to allow an additional attempt, click the Moderate This Quiz link on the Sidebar under Related Items.
The Moderate Quiz page displays the following information:
- To allow additional attempts for multiple students, click the checkbox next to each of their names. [A] If you want to select all students, click the top checkbox [B] to select all. In the above example, three students are selected.
- Click the Change Extensions for [#] Selected Students button [C] to give extensions for the students.
- Enter the number of extra attempts you'd like to give to the student in the Extra Attempts field.
Remember : Extra attempts and time added, if applicable, will apply to all selected students.
- If the quiz is locked, you will need to unlock the quiz for the student by clicking the Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt checkbox.
- Click the Save button.
Please Note: Extensions that have been defined will be visible from the Moderate Quiz screen.

View Quiz/Exam Attempts
To view a student(s) quiz/exam attempts, you must do so by accessing the specific quiz that a student(s) has been allowed take multiple times.
- Access the quiz for which you would like to view student attempts. The quiz can be accessed from the Quizzes link on the Course Navigation menu or by clicking the quiz title link located at the top of the corresponding gradebook column within in the Gradebook.
- Click the Settings icon [1] located on the top right corner of the quiz page and then select the Show Student Quiz Results option [2].
Please Note: At least ONE student must have completed the quiz/exam multiple times in order view all attempts. - Select the student's name from the Students who have taken the quiz column.
- On the Sidebar, select the quiz attempt you would like view [A]. You may also allow an additoinal attempt for the student by selecting the allow this student an extra attempt button [B].
- If you allow an additional attempt for a student, the text above the allow this student an extra attempt button will update indicating that the student has an additional attempt remaining.
- If you allow an additional attempt for a student, the text above the allow this student an extra attempt button will update indicating that the student has an additional attempt remaining.
